Purpose and scope

Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting Training aims to provide practical acquisition of basic skills in effective human rights reporting. This training focuses on methodological standards in monitoring and reporting human rights violations, data collection and verification of data, report writing, reporting to United Nations mechanisms and includes practical studies on these issues.

Target audience

Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting Training must be taken by those who are working for, planning to do or are interested in human rights advocacy, monitoring and reporting issues. This training also contributes to individual development in terms of contributing to the development of reporting skills in general and raising awareness about human rights.

Trainers

This training is delivered by trainers who have experience in human rights monitoring and reporting training and have taken part in or carried out national and international projects and studies on the subject.

Objectives and learning outcomes

Those who have successfully completed the Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting Training are expected to;

  • Explain the basic concepts related to human rights,
  • Define the processes related to the monitoring and reporting of human rights violations,
  • Apply methodological standards of human rights reporting,
  • Apply data collection and verification techniques in human rights reporting,
  • Monitor and report human rights violations,
  • Describe the reporting processes and special procedures to the United Nations mechanisms on human rights issues,
  • Prepare shadow reports,
  • Describe the procedures for complaining to the Human Rights Council.

Delivery and method

Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting Training is implemented in the form of face-to-face training. It is recommended to have no more than 20 people in each group to ensure active participation and effective learning in this training. However, if conditions arise that prevent face-to-face training, the training may be delivered remotely by using the Me-Learning© online learning platform and the Actio© meeting management tool.

In this training, trainers guide learners through interaction, group work and practice in a way that facilitates learning and improves their practical skills. In order for the learners to experience the human rights reporting processes and to acquire the targeted skills, the training is carried out practically and the training process is completed by preparing a sample report.

Learning tools and materials

In Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting Training, along with a course presentation, case studies, exercises and worksheets are used as teaching and learning materials to cover all stages and actions of human rights reporting processes.

Audio visual and multimedia materials, templates, worksheets and other materials for exercises and practices are prepared by the trainer and distributed to the participants. However, if there is a sufficient number of hardware such as computers, notebooks or tablets in the learning environment, all materials are provided in a digital format and studies are carried out in digital context.

In accordance with our waste reduction policy, printed materials are not distributed in this training unless it is educationally necessary.

Assessment and evaluation

In order to optimize the learning process according to the learners’ needs, the level of readiness of the learners is assessed informally by the trainer at the beginning of the training. The studies carried out by the learners within the scope of exercises and applications, the draft report they prepare are evaluated as an indicator of the development / learning of the learners and the trainer provides feedback and adjusts learning activities based on them in order to ensure effective learning. In addition, at the end of the training, the Training Evaluation Questionnaire is applied.

All participants who complete the training receive a certificate of attendance showing that they have completed the Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting Training, with duration of the training clearly stated.
